The garden here is said to have been designed by Agata Sochi, master of the Enshu line of the tea ceremony. It was commissioned by Mizoguchi Nobunao, third head of the Shibata clan, when he built his shimoyashiki (castle residence) in 1665. The garden is a stroll (kaiyûshiki) style with several tea pavilions surrounding a large pond.
